The north-west corner of Southampton — North Baddesley, Nursling, Rownhams and Chilworth — is stitched together by three fast roads: the M27 around Junctions 3 and 4, the M271 spur down to the docks, and the A3057 Romsey Road. Fast roads mean high-speed breakdowns, and the hard shoulder on the M271 in particular is short in places, so knowing what to do matters. Motorway breakdowns at J3 and the M271
If your car starts losing power on the M27 here, aim for the Rownhams services — a service area is the safest possible place to wait for recovery, with the added bonus of coffee. North Baddesley and the A27 corridor
North Baddesley's long ribbon along Botley Road / A27 towards Romsey is mostly residential call-outs: cars that will not start, clutches that have finally given up on the Toothill climb, and punctures from the lanes towards Valley Park. With most modern cars carrying no spare wheel, a puncture that a plug kit cannot fix means a lift to a tyre shop — a quick, cheap job when the truck is already nearby in Chandler's Ford or Romsey.
Nursling, Rownhams and Chilworth
Nursling's industrial estate, the big distribution sheds off Brownhill Way and the science park at Chilworth all generate fleet work — non-starting pool cars, vans with dead batteries after a weekend, the occasional misfuelled diesel (if that is you, do not start it: read our wrong fuel guide first).
